East Asia

East Asian history at Princeton focuses on Japanese and Chinese history, with strengths in medieval, late imperial, and modern East Asia. Many faculty are jointly appointed with the Department of East Asian Studies and work closely with faculty and students in both departments. Faculty members study a wide variety of topics, including the history of science, technology, and medicine; Sino-Japanese cultural history; education and the examination system; material culture; state and society; religion; and labor.
