Medieval

The study of medieval European history spans from late antiquity to the beginning of the Renaissance. The Department also has particular expertise in medieval Japanese, Byzantine, Ottoman, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean history. Faculty members write on a broad range of topics, including state formation in pre-modern societies, Islam, the Crusader States, medicine, religion, and ethnic identity. Methodological approaches range from military, political, and cultural history to economic, intellectual, and social history.
