Event Description
Susan Burns will discuss her forthcoming book, Kingdom of the Sick: Leprosy, Citizenship, and Japan (University of Hawai’i Press). She explores the conceptualization of the body through medical and legal discourses, and tracks ideas about leprosy from “karmic redemption” in medieval Japan to a public health problem in late Meiji. Susan also has a long-standing interest in reproductive rights and extends the discussion to notions of biological citizenship, disability, and gender.
The talk will be given by Susan Burns (University of Chicago). The event is sponsored by the Department of East Asian Studies.
