Berkowitz explores the engagement of European Jewry with photography in Eastern Europe during the interwar period and the Holocaust. Some managed to work in Nazi ghettos after 1939 leaving a body of work which has yet to be examined and appreciated.
Michael Berkowitz is a professor of modern Jewish history at University College London and editor of Jewish Historical Studies: Transactions of the Jewish Historical Society of England.
