Beth Lew-Williams was awarded the Sally and Ken Owen Award for The Chinese Must Go: Violence, Exclusion and the Making of the Alien in America. The award recognizes the best book on the history of the Pacific West. The prize citation from the Western History Association reads, “Connecting anti-Chinese rhetoric with settler colonialism, Lew-Williams explains the important role of racial violence, broadly construed, in fueling the national push for Chinese exclusion.”
