The Humanities Council’s executive committee awarded a 2024-25 Gardner Magic Project grant to support activities related to Janet Chen’s project “Island at the Crossroads: New Directions in Taiwan Studies.” The goal of this project is to bring Taiwan Studies to Princeton. Taiwan will be explored in the context of global and regional concerns and address themes such as empire and post-colonialism, geopolitics, social movements, and democratization. The principal activities will take place on campus in academic year 2024–25, and a culminating international conference will be held in October 2025.
Janet Chen is a historian of modern China, specializing in the twentieth century.
