Laura Edwards Gives Fleming Lectures in Southern History

On April 15–16, Professor Laura Edwards delivered a series of lectures on “Writing Law, Rewriting Lives: Legal Authority in the Nineteenth-Century South” at Louisiana State University.

The Fleming Lecture series was established in 1936 and is named in memory of Walter Lynwood Fleming, a former professor of history at LSU who distinguished himself as a scholar of the Reconstruction period.

The lecture series was as follows:

  • "The Power of the Pen: Conjuring Law with Words on a Page" – April 15, 7 pm
  • "Written Words, Worlds of Change: Capturing Law to Effect Social Change – April 16, 10 am
  • “The Tyranny of Text: Living Within the Letter of the Law” – April 16, 2 pm
