New Distribution Requirements for the Class of 2023 (and Beyond)

Jan. 13, 2021

The History department faculty has voted to approve a proposal from the Undergraduate Program Committee, to revise the requirements for the concentration.

The prerequisite for entering the concentration will be reduced from two courses to one course.

In place of four geographic areas, the distribution requirement will have two components:

  • One course in each of four thematic areas:
    • Knowledge & Belief
    • Power & Conflict
    • Pre-Modern (pre-1700)
    • Race & Difference
  • Two courses principally focused on the histories of Africa, Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East, which may double count with the thematic areas.

History concentrators in the Class of 2022 will continue with the existing requirements, unless they wish to migrate to the new rubric.
