Olivier Burtin *17 has published his first book, A Nation of Veterans: War, Citizenship, and the Welfare in Modern America (University of Pennsylvania Press). It explores the role played by military veterans in the growth of social policy in the mid-twentieth century United States. A Nation of Veterans offers a new history of the U.S. welfare state that highlights its longstanding connection with warfare. The book shows how military veterans formed one of the most powerful social movements in mid-century American society, and how that movement helped create the world’s most generous system of welfare benefits for former soldiers.
