Funding Opportunities

Junior Paper Funding

The Davis Center for Historical Studies awards a limited number of research grants to junior history majors every fall and spring to research the JP paper topic.

These grants are aimed at encouraging students to reach beyond sources available at Princeton, for instance by visiting archives or libraries in New York, Philadelphia, or Washington, DC. Students may propose a trip further afield, but such a request must be well-justified.

To be considered, a student must have compiled a strong record in departmental work. The application requires a detailed research plan, budget, and a letter of support from the faculty member advising the student’s junior paper. Award recipients will receive a cash grant of up to $500. Please apply through the SAFE website, which will solicit the necessary recommendation from your junior adviser.

Details of each application cycle (including deadlines for submission and dates of award announcements) will be announced to juniors early in the fall and spring semesters, respectively, via email from the Undergraduate Office of the Department of History.

Please reach out to Jackie Wasneski, Administrative Coordinator, with any questions.

Stone/Davis History Senior Thesis Prize

To encourage sophisticated training and experience in historical research among history undergraduates, The Davis Center for Historical Studies awards a limited number of Lawrence Stone and Shelby Cullom Davis Prize fellowships to rising seniors for their senior thesis projects. Award recipients will receive a cash grant of up to $6,000 for use over summer break. To be considered, a student must have compiled an excellent record in departmental work, and must be recommended by a member of the department. The recommendation letter should be accompanied by a detailed research plan and budget written by the student.

Per University regulations, we will be covering allowable domestic and international travel and accommodation, as well as expenses designated by the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) for students to conduct research in University archives and libraries. Awards will be approved for remote research in accordance with the list of allowable expenses approved by OUR; please refer to the O.U.R. site for details and clarification on what is and is not covered.

Note that a second, smaller round of fellowship applications is offered in late fall of senior year for research conducted during winter break.

Details of each application cycle (including deadlines for submission and dates of award announcements) will be announced to juniors early in the fall and seniors in the spring semesters via email from the Undergraduate Office of the Department of History.
